We see in 1 Corinthians 10 when Paul was talking about the Children of Israel in the desert and how all that happened to them are examples and were written for our admonition (verse 11); that he talks about the rock that followed them, 1 Cor.10:4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.
I couldn’t see any mention of a Rock following them!!! Until I was shown the 2 instances where they got water from the rock. One time before the Law was given; and the 2nd time after the Law was given.
1st. Ex.17:6 (notice the LORD said “Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.”
2nd. Nu.20:8 (notice the LORD said “Take your rod;….. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield it’s water; thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their animals.”
What did Moses do? Nu.20:9-11 He gathered the people and said to them “Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock?” Then he struck the rock twice with his rod and water came out.
What was God’s response? To both Moses and Aaron He said “Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”
I used to wonder about what a harsh punishment God gave Moses and Aaron until I saw that the Rock represented Christ. Before the giving of the Law the rock represented the crucified Christ but after the giving of the Law the rock represented the risen Christ. Do we crucify Christ again to gain forgiveness of sins? NO. Hebrews 6:4-8; 9:28; 10:26-29. Now we come and confess (speak) our sin and He is faithful and just and will forgive our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness, 1Jn.1:9
